In September, the National Center worked with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Conference of State Legislatures to host a National Tribal Energy Summit. The summit brought together cabinet-level officials, including DOE Secretary Ernest Moniz and Department of Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, as well as state governments, private industry, utilities, and representatives from academia to explore energy development and security issues identified by both tribes and the DOE.
In March, young Valentino Rivera – son of former Pueblo of Pojoaque Governor George Rivera – was severely injured in a car accident in the Santa Fe area. He recently returned home after spending months in a rehabilitation center in Baltimore, and is slowly but surely making progress in his recovery.
The look and excitement on participants’ faces told us all we needed to know – that YES! showed Native youth that they can be successful in whatever field they choose. We’re already making plans for an even bigger and better YES! next year at National RES Las Vegas 2016 and at other RES events across the country.
Our regional Reservation Economic Summit (RES), RES New Mexico was our largest yet, with over 700 people in attendance for the premier economic development event in Indian Country, which took place November 16th through the 19th at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino in beautiful Santa Fe, NM. We’re already looking forward to next year, when we return to Buffalo Thunder for a second consecutive year.
